VG at the WI

When the Women’s Institute asks you to go and dance for them, the only real question is “where do you want us”……I mean….we’re talking tea….we’re talking cake…we’re talking being looked after………*sigh*…………………………oh sorry!!….ahem…..

…and so it was when Bridgnorth WI asked us to dance for them at St James’ Hall in their lovely town at the end of April.

We have a special show, a sort of Morris Roadshow (I call it) which we have taken round for a number of years now to perform in small venues such as village halls, community centres etc. It’s compact, energetic, busy and full of music and dance (bit like us really) and it’s so much fun for us to do.

We can fit about 11 dances into it, some Morris/dance education, a bit of a sing-song and some mock interviews with team members (that’s when we all try to hide) and sometimes members of the audience.

The evening at Bridgnorth was great. We were warmly welcomed by the very cheerful and friendly women there (always a bonus when you turn up and people actually know you’re coming!) and made to feel very comfortable before we got going. We had a good number of team members available so were able to put out a nice mixture of new and seasoned team members and musicians into a nicely informal atmosphere.

Ray (Our Squire) began proceedings with our traditional Calling On song “Staines Morris” then the Bull and Pump Morris Men got things underway with a very spirited “Upton” followed by an excellent “Severn Steps” from The Shrewsbury Lasses.

For our new members this was only their second dance-out ever and they coped extremely well with warm and slightly space-restricted conditions (all part of being a Morris Dancer, just got to get your Morris radar right).

The evening went brilliantly, the dancers were fabulous, our musicians were, as always awesome and the audience were really great as they clapped, even cheered in some places and joined in at the end with a communal (and, as always chaotic) Steeple Claydon dance. Bull and Pump also debuted (for most of us anyway) an eight man Shrewsbury Gallop which is when………well, you’ll just have to come and see it! :))

The legendary hospitality of the WI was very much in evidence at the end of a super evening when sponges, cakes (lemon drizzle – personal favourite of many of us….hint…hint)), tea coffee and other goodies were produced and we had a good chat with many of the WI members before returning to Shrewsbury.

If you are interested in booking us for one of these events just email bev.langton@talk21.com……but don’t forget….lemon drizzle…..OK?? *winks*

Tick VG for Shrewsbury Morris :))

From Busk til Yawn

Quentin Tarantino would have been (almost) proud. It all started with a secret photo-shoot in a highly cool location, involved a sharply dressed young rap star, gorgeous musical divas and……..two Morris Dancers……oh well, perhaps you can’t have everything (George Clooney for example)……or maybe you can?

The truth is we were delighted and very honoured to be asked to perform for the second Big Busk to be held in Shrewsbury town centre on Sat 5th April 2014.

We jumped at the invitation to be a small part of the amazing group of, musicians, singers, dancers, drummers, magicians, animal experts, yoga…erm…practitioners, poets, readers, spoon players and street artistes who turned out in huge numbers to support the worthy cause of The Shrewsbury Ark.

It being our first dance-out of the new 2014 season we were very excited to be able to include three new men (Mike, Richard and a new Tom) in the ranks of The Bull and Pump Morris Men. The new ladies who have joined the Shrewsbury Lasses are working hard at practice and are just waiting for their kit before they join us dancing in public too, which is also very exciting.

We were allocated two 20 minute spots in The Square and Pride Hill which were ideal for “blooding” (or should that be sticking?) our new dancers. Large crowds gathered to watch both performances and we were delighted to find that lots of people engaged with us and came to chat before, during and after the dances. We love that!

Apart from a tumble, a wardrobe malfunction and a Mexican stand-off with a group of mediaeval re-enactors (in the nicest possible way….we took their photos and they stood down) the afternoon was terrific and we were pleased to maintain the high standard of all of the some 90 acts who performed throughout the day.

The dancing and clogging was great, the musicians as always were superb, the team-work was brilliant and our new members were absolutely fabulous! It was sad that one or two of our regular team were injured and could not take part but some joined us anyway, which was lovely and we hope they will all be back dancing with us very soon.

A great start to 2014, after which a tired but very happy Shrewsbury Morris piled into a Winnebago and headed off into the Mexican sunset….well…..all points Shrewsbury anyway…….and not a vampire in sight!

Shrewsbury Morris are sponsored by the wonderful (and local) Pipekit and Battlefield Printing Company.

The Busk Blog

So, the new dance season is beckoning her handkerchief bound finger and our 2014 so far sees us with a brand new sponsor, (Pipekit….brilliant local company…..lovely folk… make amazing things to help industry and people…..loving them!!), brand new dancers, some new dances to perform and a whole truckload of excitement coming your way as Shrewsbury Morris get ready to kick off our programme.

This begins with us being part of the second Big Busk in Shrewsbury town centre on Sat April 5th in aid of The Shrewsbury Ark. This will be a day when Shrewsbury fills with all sorts of wonderful music (and some dancing from ours truly) which should rival last year’s event for fun, colour and diversity.

At the time of going to blog we don’t have the exact programme for the day but we will publish details on here, Twitter and FB as the event gets nearer (but don’t bet on us NOT being in Shrewsbury Square at some point!)

To publicise the day we took part in a Shropshire Star photoshoot at Music Bros in Rous Hill a week ago, organised by The Big Busk guardians Karen Higgins and Annemarie Bebbington. This turned out to be really fun as the event had to be kept secret because of all the groupies and fans who were roaming Shrewsbury, their faces glued to their mobile phone screens trying to find out where Julia and I were going to be. This proved an exhausting and extremely stressful time as we had to hide in………..OK, reality check!!…….they were possibly more likely to have been looking for young Birmingham rapper and rising star Leo Goldenchild who is also taking part in The Big Busk and whom we met at the photoshoot along with singer/songwriter Nikki Rous.

What a thoroughly nice group of people they were and we look forward to catching up with them at the event in April.

So, for a good day out, some diverse (and free) musical entertainment covering opera to ukelele bands….and of course us….come and join in The Big Busk on Saturday April 5th, help a good cause and have some fun!

Because we will…:))

Looking Back and Forward – A Brief Overview

2013 was quite a year for us, one of the best in our nearly 37 year history.

We performed in a football stadium, hosted a hugely successful National Day of Dance smack in the middle of wonderful Shrewsbury, danced to neon flashing lights in a Flax Mill silo, performed at our home Folk Festival, got prodded by bayonets in Wellington, jigged with a Lego Brick on legs, entertained huge crowds in a Welsh castle, had great dance fun with a Mayor, froze and almost got trapped in Snowdonia, danced around Boycie at a Food Festival and enjoyed Morrismania at Upton on Severn, amongst many other great memories…….oh and a bodhran playing frog and a bright green Medusa came to our Christmas Ceilidh!

In addition, we have recruited a lot of lovely new people, seen our social media presence bloom to an extraordinary degree and just been sponsored for 2014 by Pipekit, a very forward thinking, family run local company which has truly embraced the Morris ethos.

Exciting times!

So, we emerge into a New Year buzzing with anticipation about what’s to come and with a flood of dance requests from all over the country to work through and consider…….more recruiting evenings……an AGM (OK, not so good)……a pantomime……some charity stuff……and lots of other potentially great things.

We are still always looking for new members, we’re in training now (Sundorne School, Shrewsbury, most Thurs nights, 8pm) and you (yes you, the one reading this) could be the next person we recruit.

So, if you like fun, laughter, friendship and can move about a bit, (no experience necessary) the chances are we can turn you into a Morris Dancer.

Call us on 07799 408297 and join us in 2014 for a season of FUN!!

A Perfect Day (with apologies to Lou Reed)

We’re hoping to reap just what we sowed

……by enough people being inspired by the last fabulous weekend of Morris Dancing in Shrewsbury to come along to our Try Outs/Open Evenings at Sundorne School, from 8pm on both Thursday 10th and 17th October. It’s a very informal, fun evening where you get a chance to meet us, chat to us, have a drink and some nibbles with us (there’s cake!!), see what we do, look at our rich history and tradition, see us in action and generally have a good time.
Who knows, you might even feel so good about it that you want to join us! We are always looking for new members. So, men and women of hereabouts, if you want to have a peek into the wonderful world of Morris and find out what’s so great about it and why we love doing it, now you know what to do.

Pssst…….I think there are people coming already so you’ll have company……

Hope to see lots of you there.

Check out our website www.shrewsburymorris.co.uk for more information and find links there to our huge Twitter account @shrewsmorris, our FB page and our Flickr page, bursting with photos of last weekend and of….well, us really….

It’s always fun dancing with Shrewsbury Morris!

Mary Poppins would probably approve!………

This Saturday (Sept 28th) Shrewsbury will fill with Morris dancers stepping in time and bringing more accents (real ones) than you can shake a dodgy Dick van Dyke at, as teams from all over the country descend on the town (minus umbrellas we hope) for a jolly holiday of music, noise, colour and fun for the Morris Federation Day of Dance. All hosted by your very own Shrewsbury Morris Dancers….that’s us!

But beware, it will not all be a spoonful of sugar helping this little lot go down. Along with the graceful garlands and fabulously different costumes, there will be pipes, drums, yelps and whoops, stomping of clogs, smashing of sticks, razor sharp hankies, flashing steel blades and not a soaring kite in sight as Morris styles of all descriptions meet in central Shrewsbury and The Quarry to entertain you with their skills and love of their tradition, all in a most delightful way! There might even be a dragon or two…..

It is the first time that this annual event has been held in Shrewsbury and we feel very honoured to have been chosen to host it. We hope that lots of people will come and watch the free show from 10am until 4pm and that the town will benefit as a whole, as Shrewsbury people again demonstrate that they can support all manner of entertainment as they have done throughout recent years.

The dance spots will be in The Quarry, The Castle, St Mary’s Church, Rowley’s House and at our base for the day, Shrewsbury Baptist Church; Central to whom we owe sincere thanks for their kindness. In addition, Shrewsbury Morris will be in The Square all day, dancing with as many visiting teams as we can. By the way, if you’re there around lunchtime you might see something a little special and which will be the culmination of much hard work by our leaders Ray and Bev Langton, local schools and several other team members!!

The action kicks off at 9.45am in Shrewsbury’s Market Square with The Mayor of Shrewsbury, Cllr Jon Tandy kindly opening proceedings for us.

So, Spit Spot……get yourself along to Shrewsbury on Saturday 28th September to enjoy a free day of fabulous fun and glorious mayhem with some of the best Morris sides in the country.

We hope that some of them (and you) will also join us the next day (Sunday 29th) from 11am at the Battlefield 1403 site for a morning of more free entertainment.

One thing’s for sure, when you’re with a Morris side you’re in glad company!

Folk, Trains, Flax Mills and Churches

After a brief dance hiatus and a much needed practice this Thursday at The Red Barn in Longden (for which a huge thank you to Theresa) we’re back with a bang this weekend as we join many great sides for a weekend of brilliant music, fun, dance and probably, sore heads as The Shrewsbury Folk Festival swings into action once more. From our point of view we are really looking forward to it as it’s been quite a while since Shrewsbury Morris have danced there so it’s great for us to be at our own Festival again. Do come up and say hello to us if you see us about.

We’re dancing on the country stage at 11am with our friends from Ironbridge the superb Ironmen Severn Gilders Morris. From there we travel into town to St Alkmonds for a lunchtime dance spot (12.15 to 1pm) with the brilliant Seven Champions Morris before returning to the Showground to finish the day dancing with Noa’s Danish Chilts and JD and Folk (what great names Morris sides have!!)

Other Morris sides will be all over the town on Saturday and Sunday too, at The Castle, St Mary’s Church, St Alkmonds and The Square so do go and have a look at them and enjoy what they do.

The following Thursday evening (Aug 29th) we renew our acquaintance with Bridgnorth when we meet up with other local dancing buddies Bedcote Morris to dance at the very picturesque and unique Severn Valley Railway which we are really pleased about.

Then a very busy period ensues for us as we dance at The Flaxmill in town from 1130am on Sunday 8th September and then travel out later that same day to the lovely little village of Shrawardine, near Montford to join in the celebrations of the village church’s 800th anniversary from 2pm onwards.

That will be followed by our high point of the year. You’ll read about it in the local papers soon but we believe some 400 Morris Dancers are going to invade Shrewsbury (in a good way) on Sat 28th September to celebrate this glorious tradition with us as we host the Morris Federation Day of Dance. It’s going to be a superb day for Shrewsbury and for us as the town and The Quarry will be filled with colour, fabulous music, some pretty strange sights and most importantly wonderful dancing from 10am – 4pm.

The team has been working towards this for nearly a year now and we recommend that if you want to see and hear something truly unique, traditional and just plain gorgeous then come to Shrewsbury that day and join with us in a fantastic celebration of Morris.

In addition, we and (hopefully) some other teams will be dancing at the Battlefield1403 site on the morning of Sunday 29th September to blow away the cobwebs of the night before! As well as kindly hosting us they have their Harvest and Heritage food festival the same weekend so, even more reason to come out and watch us all.

Finally, here’s an early invitation to all local men and women to our “come and have a go” open evenings on Thursdays 10th and 17th October at Sundorne School from 8pm until 10pm. Come and join us for some fun, drinks and nibbles, see what we do, chat to the team and have a go with the bells, sticks and hankies. Who knows, you might like it so much you join us – lots of people came last time and we acquired quite a few new members who are doing really well and (we think) really enjoying the great dance, music, friendship, fun, fitness and well-being that this amazing traditional activity gives us. More about this event as time goes on.

In the meantime, why not follow us on Twitter @shrewsmorris (well over 6,000 people already do) on Facebook or via our website www.shrewsburymorris.co.uk
